Chemnitz is a large city in the Free State of Saxony with a population of around 250,000. The oldest documentary reference dates back to 1143. With the onset of the industrial revolution at the beginning of the 19th century, Chemnitz grew by leaps and bounds and developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to clever minds and hard-working hands. Between 1953 and 1990, the city was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. In 2025, Chemnitz, like the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica, will be the European Capital of Culture
Chemnitz is a city full of culture and sport. In recent decades, figure skaters, track and field athletes and cyclists in particular have carried the city's name out into the world, while in the 2020s the Niners Chemnitz basketball team in particular attracted attention across Europe. Curling has also been played in Chemnitz for more than two decades.
Curling in Chemnitz
"Curling... It's not just that politeness and respect are part of the rules and are actually practiced... It's the diversity of young and old, men and women, fat and thin, wheelchair users and deaf people, teams from Lodz, Hamburg, Berlin, Aue and Chemnitz. And they all play together without rancor, without gloating, on an equal footing. Aren't we all a little bit curling?" (Holm Krieger)
Curling has been played in Chemnitz for over 20 years - within the Chemnitzer Eislauf-Club CEC e.V.. Currently, training takes place once a week in the training hall of the Jutta Müller Eissportzentrum Chemnitz. Until the end of February 2025, you can watch regular practice sessions on Thursdays between 8.15 pm and 10.15 pm. Anyone who would like to can also take part in a taster session at these times, but should register here. There will also be taster sessions for anyone interested on December 29, 2024 and February 23, 2025.
The Chemnitz Curling Tournament will take place for the 21st time from April 11 to 13, 2025, and will also be held in the large ice rink of the Jutta Müller Eissportzentrum Chemnitz in 2025. In 2025, the tournament will also be the final tournament of the ECoC Curling Cup 2025, which the CEC's curling department is organizing together with curling clubs in Trutnov and Swidnica as part of the official Capital of Culture programme. The German Double Mixed Curling Championships for deaf athletes will also be held alongside the tournament.
